So happy to congratulate all the winners of the 2015 Royal Palm Literary Award competition, announced Saturday night at the Florida Writers Conference.
Two very special awards were given, as follows:
The Published Book of the Year was Out of Sight, Out of Mind: A Writer’s Guide to Mastering Viewpoint, an educational/informational submission by Ken Pelham.

Have you ever heard the expression, “See you in the funny papers?” Since I consider that section the most important (because it brings me joy), imagine my delight to find, on the back page of today’s comics, an article by the wonderful Joy Dickinson discussing novelists who weave threads of the past into stories of Southern families, which mentioned my novel, Sewing Holes! The other featured novel is “A Place We Knew Well: College Park, 1962” by the amazing Susan Carol McCarthy. Brad Kuhn and I are about to jump in the car to head over to hear her read at Bookmark It from 3-5 p.m. Hope to see you there!

LifeArt Studio is delighted to invite you to join us as we practice yoga and meditation in one of Central Floridaâs most outstanding residential gardens. Created and curated by Marylou Gantner, this garden is sure to lift your spirit. As you enter the beauty of the garden, drop the busy-ness of the past week, and let your mind and heart open to the healing energy of nature. Place your mat on the deck, take your seat, and soak in the panorama of the beautiful garden spaceâits design, color, and texture, its intentional artfulness.
Weâll begin this unique yoga experience with a walking meditation through the garden and a brief introduction to âgroundingâ in beauty. Let the lake, the sky, the lushness of the out-door space calm your interior space and prepare your body for movement.
Return to the deck and experience an energizing astanga yoga practice with instructors Lezlie Laws and Linda von Wolfersdorf (together again!). You will be led gently into postures and skillfully assisted to find your best opening. Continue to take in the beauty of nature as you breathe deeply and move your body mindfully. The combination is exhilarating.
And then, Marylou Gantner, Scientific Relaxation Specialist, will balance our practice with a progressive relaxation exercise designed to put you into a state of full awareness, relaxation, and blissâsavasana.
No blissful experience is complete without something yummy to eat, and we deliver. Culinary artist Kristen Dolphy of Black Dog Cafe and Catering will be on hand to serve her nutritious and delicious smoothies. And, she will give us a step by step explanation of ingredients she combined to give you a healthy glow and post-yoga boost. Heaven.
