“Self-love is necessary for survival.
Survival is a rebellious act.
Through paintings, installations, and a truly immersive experience ERIN KENDRICK makes visible her own lived experience of being black and female in America through the inspired lenses of writer, educator, and cultural critic bell hooks and the performative brilliance of Ntozake Shange and her for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf.
This exhibition allows us to be witness to Kendrick’s exploration of both self and history. In her own words, it is “a history that taught us that we were less than, incapable, made for service over thought…but I knew better. I needed to figure out what parts of my identity had been stolen. I needed to acknowledge what part of my identity I had given away. I wanted my own things back.”
Yellow House is privileged to turn ourselves over to this remarkable voice and recognize the special role that our intimate, historically-domestic space plays in this unique and important installation. May all who observe or engage in this conversation reflect on the value of black lives, the power of the feminine, and the role of artists to speak personal truths that reverberate across our collective existence.
