About the Novel:

Soleil St. James, Dawn Anthony, Ebony Jones, and Dr. Jonelle “Johnnie” Edwards all live, work, and love in Jacksonville, Florida. The women from four different backgrounds are bonded when their worlds collide after one event both tragic and triumphant, brings them together and tests them in ways they’ve never imagined.

In a post Ray Rice, Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis, and Michael Brown world Soleil, Dawn, Ebony and Jonelle all question their place as African-American women. Is the Black woman still the mule of the world? Can justice be served when the suspect is also the victim, and the victim has a hidden criminal history? In a world where stand your ground is immunity from prosecution for murder, or a license to kill, and domestic violence is scarcely recognized, what options does any one woman have?

Write in the Language of Dreams at the Kerouac House

Laura-Lee-Bahr-300x200

Mary Ann DeStefano’s MAD about Words and the Jack Kerouac House Project of Orlando join forces once again to present another compelling workshop at the Kerouac House in Orlando, this time with current writer-in-residence Laura Lee Bahr. Here’s what they have to say about the day:

“We will explore how to connect to the endlessly creative and mysterious source of story within your own dreams and construct a meaningful story.

Before the workshop…

If you have never done a dream journal just start now: basically, when you wake up each morning, before you do anything else, write down what you recall of your dreams. If you can’t recall dreams, even feelings, sensations, images even phrases that come to mind when you first awake. It is important to not try and make sense of it, and to write them down with as much description of the emotion that you felt in the dream connected with whatever was occurring within the dream.

If you are struggling with remembering anything (or like me, even reading your handwriting later) just writing a dream you remember from any time in your life.

Before you come to the workshop, pick the three or four dreams that have the most emotional connection or mystery to you that you are okay with sharing, dissecting, and diving deep into during our workshop.

LAURA LEE BAHR is the current author in residence at the Kerouac House. She is the author of two novels, Haunt (Fungasm Press, Wonderland Book Award winner) and Long-Form Religious Porn. Haunt was translated into Spanish under the title Fantasma (Orciny Press). Laura has been a screenwriter for various award-winning films, including Jesus Freak and the little death. Her debut feature as writer/director, Boned, won “Best Micro-Budget Feature” at the Toronto Independent Film Festival and is currently distributed through Gravitas Ventures (available on demand). Her latest book, Angel Meat, a collection of her short stories, is available through Fungasm Press. To promote it, she created the “Bahr Crawl,” a string of readings across the U.S. and overseas where local authors join her in a celebration of the spoken word. When not living in gratitude at the generosity of the Kerouac Foundation, she lives with her sweetheart and two lovely felines in Los Angeles, CA, where she teaches at a school for twice-exceptional students.

The Jack Kerouac Writer-in-Residence Project of Orlando partners with MAD about Words to offer you this opportunity to learn from and write Laura Lee Bahr, the current writer-in-residence at Kerouac House. ”

For new Jacksonville Scribblers: Brad and Darlyn Kuhn met at a farewell party for one of the writers at the Kerouac House, visited and got to know each other well during Darlyn’s residency there, and got married on its front porch five years later.  So the K-House is special to your Scribbler in more ways than one.

The Southeast Sister Cities Reading Tour concept is simple. Our writers read in your town. Then your writers read in our town.

A group of Jacksonville authors visited St. Petersburg for the first event. In turn, a group of St. Pete authors will read in Jacksonville on April 7th. Everybody wins!

Visiting writers from St. Pete include: Tiffany Razzano, Cole Bellamy, Gloria Munoz, Wayne Lemmons, and Cathy Salustri. PLUS, hear Jacksonville poet Lynn Skapyak Harlin.

You won’t want to miss it!

Free and open to the public.

This event is co-presented by Wordier Than Thou and Scribbles, with thanks to Bab’s Lab. It is part of Public Art Week 2018 – Building a Better Community.

Public Art Week (PAW) is an annual, week-long initiative that celebrates Jacksonville’s public art and highlights the benefits that are created when investments are made in art that is accessible by all. It is led by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville to encourage residents and visitors to explore and engage with works of art that comprise Jacksonville’s rapidly developing artistic and creative landscape. In addition to advancing the community’s awareness of and engagement with the City of Jacksonville’s official public art collection, PAW also showcases public art initiatives led by private entities and individuals.

PAW supports the Cultural Council’s role of ensuring broad accessibility and public engagement with the arts culturally, socially, educationally, and economically. It also supports the Cultural Council’s role of advocating for public and private financial support for Jacksonville’s arts and cultural sector.

Residents and visitors of Jacksonville are encouraged to explore their artistic side during Public Art Week by capturing images of their favorite murals, sculptures, mosaics, or memorials and then share them through social media. Remember to use #JAXPAW2018 when sharing your photos and tag the Cultural Council (@moreartculture).
