The Twisted Road to Publication

Twisted Road to publication square

Join the owner of Twisted Road Publications, Joan Leggitt, and authors Pat Spears and Darlyn Finch Kuhn as they share their stories of the long and winding road to publication – a mix of persistent dreaming, cautionary tales, and a belief in the power of community.  The authors will also read from their novels, Dream Chaser (Spears) and Sewing Holes (Kuhn).  Learn how you can submit your work to the Southern Gothic Revival Short Fiction Contest, to be judged by Dorothy Allison.

Tuesday, May 26th, 6:30 p.m., Orlando Public Library, 101 E. Central Blvd., Downtown Orlando.

Dark Humor, Weird Characters & Strange Places

MAD-about-Words-FF1A42-200

Traditional Southern Gothic literature has earned its place in the literary canon through classic works by authors like William Faulkner, Harper Lee, Carson McCullers, Tennessee Williams, and Flannery O’Conner. Come learn how current writers are rediscovering this fascinating sub-genre dealing with disenfranchised voices in warped communities—not necessarily set in the American South.

We’ll start by examining some much-beloved Southern Gothic works, then move into current examples, and end the day with you generating new material of your own that embodies some of the characteristics of the Southern Gothic Revival. We’ll sprinkle writing prompts throughout the session, so you can get your feet wet by trying out the concepts being discussed.

You’ll also learn about exciting places to submit your work after you’ve spit-shined it, including one involving author Dorothy Allison and the chance to see your work in a short story anthology to be published by Twisted Road Publications next year.

Space is limited. Advance registration is required to reserve your seat.

Her debut novel, Sewing Holes, is available now from Twisted Road Publications, Bookmark It, Writers Block Bookstore, Amazon, and wherever books are sold.

We were young once! Come celebrate with these new young writers from Trinity Prep

Susan Lilley

Your Scribbler had the privilege of speaking with Susan Lilley’s writing class at Trinity Preparatory School yesterday.  I gave a talk entitled “Change the Names and Make Stuff Up,” and boy, were these students bright, perceptive, and on the ball!  In twenty minutes of writing they had fresh new material underway, using the techniques we’d discussed.

Come out to Trinity House tonight, Thursday, April 30th at 7 p.m. for their annual Literary Society open mic reading.  Maybe we can convince Ms. Lilley to read a poem or two, as well.  This Lilley fan-girl will certainly try.

I’ll kick things off with a short reading from Sewing Holes, and will have copies available to sign, as well. Looking forward to celebrating these fine young writers with you!

Trinity Preparatory School, 5700 Trinity Prep Ln, Winter Park, FL 32792.

To find Trinity House, enter the campus from Aloma Avenue onto Trinity Prep Lane.  Turn right at the first road, between the ball fields and the big parking lot.  Drive past the pool, and past the roundabout, bearing left just past the track field.  Keep a’goin’ until you reach the small house by the lake, under the trees. (It’s not shown on the map.)  A lovely spot for good stories and poems.
