Orlando Limerick Writers Win Saturday Evening Post Prizes

J C Leyendecker image

On June 11, 1921, J.C. Leyendecker’s cover image, above, appeared on the Saturday Evening Post. Elaine Person, of Orlando, won the grand prize for her limerick describing the image:

The little girl started to preen.

She wanted by all to be seen.

Said the boy, who was skittish,

“You are not even British

And therefore could never be queen.”

As if that doesn’t make Orlando proud enough, local writer Ryan Tilley won honorable mention in the same contest, the first time that feat has ever been accomplished.

FUN FACT: For your Scribbler’s 50th birthday, two-time US Poet Laureate Billy Collins recited a limerick he wrote about Brad and me, in the car on the way to my party.  Alas, the limerick has been lost to the sands of time, because, quoting Billy, “The gift was in the performance.” Thanks again, kind sir.

Writing a Verse Novel

Melody Dimick in Pearls

Here’s what Rick Feeney wants you to know:

“’When characters and their emotions are the drivers of your story, consider writing a verse novel,’ says Melody Dimick, speaker at the next FWA Orlando meeting being held Wednesday,  July 11th (not July 4th!) at 6:30 pm at the University Club of Winter Park. Dimick will share with attendees, 1) what a verse novel is and how to determine if writing in verse will work for them, 2) participants will learn the right questions to ask themselves in order to link poems into a complete story arc, and 3) discover the value of white space to reach a target audience. The meeting is free and open to the public. Contact Rik Feeney at usabookcoach@gmail.com for more information.
