Deep Blue by Randy Wayne White

DEEP BLUE

by New York Times-bestselling author

RANDY WAYNE WHITE

Tuesday, March 22, 2016

12:00 – 2:00 PM

124 E. Welbourne Avenue, Winter Park, Florida

“With Randy Wayne White, one gets not only a dead-on thriller, with all the twists, surprises, and action one expects, but a sense that each of the Ford books is a chapter in the development of one of the most compelling characters in the genre.” Miami Herald

Doc Ford is enlisted for a deadly covert operation to track down an ISIS sympathizer in Mexico. The man Ford is seeking is a failed actor from Chicago who has turned into a terrorist, and Ford has seen a video of him apparently murdering three American citizens. As Doc Ford tackles his mission with expert precision and cunning insights, he uncovers a larger plot with far-reaching implications…implications that may reach back to the United States. And that could mean death for Ford, Tomlinson and scores of innocents around the country.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Since leaving home at age 16, and skipping college in the process, New York Times best-selling author Randy Wayne White has been a farm hand, a brass and iron foundry worker, a telephone lineman, and, for thirteen years, a full-time fishing guide at Tarpon Bay Marina on Florida’s Sanibel Island.  He has been stabbed, “shot at with intent,” and was in a hotel that got blown up by Shining Path Anarchists in Peru.  As a columnist for Outside magazine he has covered the America’s Cup races in Australia, gone dog sledding in Alaska, searched for wild orangutans on Borneo, brought back refugees from Cuba, been diving in the infamous Bad Blue Hole lake on the desolate Cat Island in the Bahamas, and even participated in a mission to steal back General Manuel Noriega’s bar stools.

DEEP BLUE is White’s 23rd Doc Ford book. He has also had four collections of his columns for Outside magazine and elsewhere published – and the new Hannah Smith series has recently debuted with GONE. In 2002, a one-hour documentary film called The Gift of the Game, about Randy’s trip to Cuba to find the remnants of the Little League teams founded by Ernest Hemingway in the days before Castro, won the “Best of the Fest” award from the 2002 Woods Hole Film Festival, then was bought by PBS and broadcast station by station in the spring and summer of 2003.

White has been awarded the Conch Republic Prize for Literature, as well as the John D. Macdonald Award for Literary Excellency.  He is one of only four writers named as an Editor At Large by prestigious Outside Magazine (Jon Krakauer, Hampton Sides and Tim Cahill are the others). In 2011, White was named a Florida Literary Legend by the Florida Heritage Society. A fishing and nature enthusiast, he has also written extensively for National Geographic Adventure, Men’s Journal, Playboy and Men’s Health.

Sports and Spoken Word

Shawn Welcome

The Florida Association for Sports and Spoken Word

The Florida Association for Sports and Spoken Word provides a meeting place for spoken word artists – poets, rappers, story tellers, singer – song writers, etc. – to share creative works with each other that have sports or games as focus or context.

We give performers 7 minutes max of stage time to perform or read their pieces.

Pieces can be about any sport or game, and can be humorous, nostalgic, quirky, surreal, poignant, celebratory (whatever).

Pieces can be written and performed from the point of view of athletes, ex-athletes, coaches, fans, referees, cheerleaders, (whatever).

Basic Premise

The Association is founded on the premise that sports and the arts have a rich relationship in America, and that sports and games give writers and performers fertile ground for exploring themes and issues important to the human spirit.

Visual Artists

We encourage visual artists who have sports as focus or context – a la Leroy Neiman and Edgar J. Brown, for example – to bring their work, display it, and (if they wish) spend time talking about their work to the group.

Host

Tim Rumsey is a Florida story teller and narrative poet who has been exploring the connections between sports, literature, and spoken word for over 20 years.

First Meeting

Our first meeting will be held on Monday, March 7, 2016 at the Maitland Public Library (Community Room), 501 Maitland Ave., Maitland, FL 32751.  Meeting starts at 7 p.m. and ends around 8:30 p.m.

We will have a short “feature” at the first meeting – internationally known spoken word artist, Shawn Welcome, who has done poetry for the Orlando Magic basketball team.

After our first meeting, we will gather once every 3 months or so – next date to be announced at the March 7 gathering.

For questions or more information, e-mail Tim Rumsey at timothyrumsey@yahoo.com or call him at 321-279-2717.
