On Sunday, October 12, at 4 p.m. join your fellow writers for critique, discussion, and camaraderie at Orlando Public Library, 101 E. Central Blvd, Magnolia Room. Writers of all genres and experience are welcome.

We will be critiquing at this meeting. If you have a piece (less than 1200 words) to be critiqued, please email it to Sarah no later than October 6th at fisk.sarah@ocls.info. Remember: In order to be eligible for critique, you must have attended at least one Writers Group meeting in the past.

Functionally Literate: A Literary Function

Functionally Literate is Burrow Press’ quarterly-ish reading series that aims to connect, entertain, and possibly intoxicate, Orlando’s community of writers, bookworms, lit nerds, and the intellectually curious. Each Function pairs the best writers in Central Florida with visiting writers from all over the world.

NY Times Bestselling Author of the Southern Reach Trilogy, Jeff Vandermeer will be presenting, along with local author Usman T. Malik.

The event is Saturday, Nov. 15 at Lowndes Shakespeare Center at 812 E. Rollins St. at 7 p.m. and is free!

“The Twelve Chairs” Comprehensive Poetry Course

Beginning this fall, get the deep instruction in poetry you’ve always wanted and couldn’t find. Al Rocheleau says his workshop will help you gain the ability to work in different styles and understand the many methods great poets employ.

Mr. Rocheleau will aid you in turning your reminisces into memorable poems to help prepare you for publication in magazines and journals. Al Rocheleau’s poems have appeared in over 40 magazines in the United States, Canada, the U.K., France, Austria, and Poland. His work has been read on WMFE, an affiliate of National Public Radio, and can be seen at internet sites as diverse as the Surratt House Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Saint Bernadette Institute of Sacred Art in New Mexico. His teaching articles are archived in resource databases of numerous colleges, high schools, and middle schools. He lives in Orlando, FL.

Jennie Jarvis Speaks at FWA Orlando meeting

 

Join us Wednesday, October 1st at 6:30 p.m. when former screenwriter turned literary writer and FWA Faculty Chairperson, Jennie Jarvis, shows you how to make the most of your writer’s conference experience, before, during, and after. You will learn how to prepare a plan to use your time to best effect, how to network, and how to follow-up after the conference. The meeting is free and open to the public. Jennie Jarvis worked in the film and television industry around the world. She served as a script analyst, producing coverage for producers, investors, actors and writers. She has operated as a freelance script consultant for over fifteen years working with clients worldwide, and she wrote and directed a number of short narrative and documentary films. Major credits include The Matrix: Revolutions, Accepted, American Idol, and more.

As a published writer, she co-owns 5writers.com and has won awards for her screenplays, essays, poetry and short fiction and appeared in Writer’s Digest Magazine and The Florida Writer. She is the Faculty Chairperson for the Florida Writer’s Association Annual Conference, and she teaches writing at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.

She is represented by Saritza Hernandez of The Corvisiero Literary Agency. Her recently released textbook, Crafting the Character Arc: A Practical Guide to Character Creation and Development is published by Beating Windward Press.
