Jerome Bixby’s Man from Earth

David Strauss is joined by a couple of other members of the successful Who Murdered Winthrop Carlson and Words with the Detective Fringe teams (Chuck Dent, Heather Lam, Larry Stallings, and Alex Carroll) in presenting the inaugural Renegade Theater Company production, Jerome Bixby’s Man from Earth, opening Saturday, July 17 at 7:30 at the Roth Jewish Community Center (851 N. Maitland Avenue) in Maitland.

This intriguing science-fiction “what if?” tale concerns a man whose friends gather at his cabin one last time to wish him well — whereupon he tells them the story of his 14000-year life. Friendships fracture, beliefs are challenged, and the lives of all involved are irrevocably changed.

The play will be performed at the JCC on July 17, 22, and 24 at 7:30PM and July 18 and 25 at 2pm. Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for students and seniors. For more information, visit http://www.renegadetheateronline.org/events.html .

Emily Carr says Show, Don’t Tell

As writers, we all know the dangers of telling but just what, we all too often find ourselves asking, does showing actually entail? In this MAD about Words workshop with Kerouac House Writer-in-Residence Emily Carr, you will explore practical strategies—from characterization to dialogue to place to metaphor & figurative language—for inhabiting the world of your text & showing from inside its imagination.
