Burrow Press – Upcoming Events

burrow press site-header

Hang out with the cool kids and visit the Burrow booth at Body//Talk’s Contact Music Festival in the Milk District on March 18. (Note: Burrow’s publisher is not one of the cool kids and will not be in attendance.)

If you enjoyed last year’s Modular Collective Art event (organized by Functionally Literate host and moog czar Jared Silvia), check out the event’s return as part of Art 31 on March 23. Synths, visuals, words — all based on chance methods.

Litlando, the day-long equivalent of an MFA for the frugal and possibly deranged, returns to the Gallery at Avalon Island on March 25. The event is spearheaded by The Drunken Odyssey with John King and all proceeds benefit our sister children’s literacy program, Page 15. Tickets are limited, so get one now!

Save the date for May 27. Functionally Literate presents: Jeff VanderMeer. In the meantime checkout his new novel, Borne.

Brevard Poetry Contest

Brevard writers, sharpen your pencils and dust off those unpublished manuscripts! For the first time, the Cape Canaveral Branch of the National Association of American Pen Women (NLAPW), the Brevard Authors Society, and the Brevard County Public Library System have joined forces to sponsor a poetry competition open to all Brevard County residents age 16 and up. Submissions will be accepted from March 1 through May 1, 2017.

The entry fee is $5.00, and each writer may submit up to three original, unpublished poems in any of the three competition categories: Formal, Free Verse, and Humor. To obtain detailed information about the competition, including guidelines and an entry cover sheet, email ccpw17@gmail.com.

All entries will be reviewed by panel of readers who support the efforts and talent of local writers of poetry. Final selection of the top three winners and the five honorable mention entrants will be made by judges who are professionals in the discipline field, appointed by the Cape Canaveral Branch of the NLAPW and the Brevard Authors’ Society.

The winners and honorable mention writers will read their winning poems and receive their awards at a ceremony on September 30, 2017 at the Central Brevard Public Library in Cocoa

The Cape Canaveral Branch of the National League of American Pen Women is a group of professional women in the arts who support the development and expression of art, music, and writing in their communities. Founded in 1969 and active for 47 years, the Cape Canaveral Branch is a subsidiary of the Florida State Association of The National League of American Pen Women, Inc. (FSA/NLAPW), a nonprofit organization.

The Brevard Authors Society was founded in 2015 as an online society of independent writers in Brevard County. Their goal is to encourage and inspire writers to achieve the highest level of literary creativity and craftsmanship in writing poetry, prose, drama, comedy, fiction and non-fiction. The Brevard Authors Society has been instrumental in the presentation of Authors’ Forums at various venues in Brevard County.

Creative Momentum Gathering Features Charlene Edge

lezliecharlene

Free Feb. 28th event hosted by Lezlie Laws, who writes:  Our February Creative Momentum Gathering is going to be extra special.  Charlene Edge is a former student of mine who has just published her long-awaited memoir called Undertow:  My Escape from Fundamentalism and Cult Control of the Way International.  Now is that a title, or what???

Charlene is a remarkable woman and has a remarkable story to tell.  I would love for you all to be there to hear not just her story of being in a cult, but her story of becoming a writer who is able to boldly express her experience.  It’s an amazing story of a young woman who wanted to be closer to God, and found herself enmeshed in intrigue, deception, and mind control.  How she found her way to freedom is fascinating, and the writing of that journey is equally as fascinating.

Join us for the FREE event, on February 28 from 7-9 p.m. at Cocina 214, Winter Park.  Come early and eat some tacos with me if you want!  You must reserve a seat, though, so let me know if you can make it.  The room is filling up quickly!”
