With Admiration and Thanks to Jeff Kunerth

Jeff Kunerth

When you admire a journalist as much as I admire Jeff Kunerth (Orlando Sentinel), it’s a real thrill when he publishes a book like Trout: A True Story of Murder, Teens, and the Death Penalty. One reviewer called it “seductive, repulsive, and compelling,” and compared it to Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood.  Thanks to Kunerth, I’ve had to re-evaluate my position on a difficult issue. I love work that makes me think, question, and think some more.

In 2013, Kunerth was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Local Reporting (along with David Breen, Stephen Hudak, and Denise-Marie Ordway) for their coverage of hazing rituals by the Florida A&M University marching band that killed a drum major and led to the resignation of the band leader and the university president.

When he’s not writing compelling features for Orlando’s daily newspaper or completing a Masters degree at Goucher College, Kunerth enjoys long-distance bike rides with wife Gretchen and his bike club, the Primal Scream. He also enjoys crafting beautiful custom cigar-box newsstands (complete with teeny-tiny newspapers and magazines sporting relevant headlines) for friends and (especially) departing Sentinel employees. My husband Brad has his hanging in his office, with pride of place.

Can’t wait to see what Kunerth writes next!

Here’s what he has to say about Sewing Holes:

“Darlyn Finch Kuhn has written a modern Southern Gothic novel set in Jacksonville in the 1970s that keeps the reader captivated from beginning to end with characters that ring true and a story that transcends time.”

GoldieBlumenstyk121211-Edit-1-300x239

American higher education is at a crossroads. Cost-minded students and their families-and the public at large-are questioning the worth of a college education.  As summer nears and students begin looking college and vocational options, having a wider understanding of benefits and challenges each present is indispensable.

On Tuesday, February 17 at 6:30 pm the Orlando County Library System brings in author Goldie Blumenstyk, one of the nation’s most respected higher education journalists (and former Orlando Sentinel writer).  She will discuss the trends that have brought the education system to this point and highlight some of the ways they will reshape America’s colleges in years to come in her new release, American Higher Education in Crisis? What Everyone Needs to Know.

This unique open mic focuses on storytelling — no poetry or music. So come share your finest prose, or if you’re just in the mood for listening, catch some tales from our area’s wordsmiths.

Readings will begin around 7 p.m.

Featured readers will kick off the night, and will be followed by open mic slots. Open mic readers get 10 minutes and will be timed.

This month’s featured readers are Suzannah Gilman and Lynn Waddell.

Gilman is an editor and contributor to the cooperative blog, The Gloria Sirens, a virtual auditorium to showcase women writers. A licensed attorney, she has published poetry, essays, fiction and nonfiction. Her work has appeared in The Florida Review, Pearl, CALYX Journal, The Dead Mule School of Southern
Literature, Slow Trains and others. She has twice been nominated for a Puschart Prize.

Waddell is an award-winning journalist and author of “Fringe Florida,” an offbeat tome that takes readers inside some of the state’s most eclectic and daring worlds. She’s covered major Florida news stories for national publications such as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Newsweek,
