The Gift: Reproduction in a Modern World

Discover the history of new reproductive technologies and how they’re changing our definitions of what makes a family. Learn about the outsourcing of reproduction and how other cultures interpret assisted reproductive technologies according to their own cultural frameworks at the Herndon Branch of the Orange County Public Library on June 16th at 7:30 p.m.

Rachel Newcomb is the author of The Gift, a novel about a college student who donates her eggs to an infertile couple. A book sale and signing will follow the program.

Second Saturday: Neuroscience and Science Fiction

Is mind control possible? Join neuroscientist Dr. Kendall F. Morris, as he discusses Science Fiction versus science fact at the Orlando Public Library on June 14th at 2 p.m. He’ll compare neurotechnology in popular television shows and movies to what might actually be possible in our lifetime. Dr. Morris is a Professor of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida.

Joanie Schirm

Join local author Joanie Schirm, winner of the 2013 Global Ebook Award for Best Biography for Adventurers Against Their Will, as she shares what she learned after the discovery of a treasure trove of WWII letters. This event will begin in the Orlando Public Library Albertson Room on June 26th at 6:30 p.m.

On a global search for her Czech father and his friends’ lost past; hear how she mined the complexities of modern resources to uncover the secrets the letters held. From a place of deep sadness to a sanctuary of bright hope, Joanie will reflect on what history tells us. Her findings reveal how the choices we make as to how we meet obstacles set before us often determine the direction of life.

A panel of local authors will discuss the romance industry, changes in publishing, the writing process, and answer all of your burning questions about the romance genre at the Orlando Public Library on Saturday, June 7th at 2 p.m. Following the Q&A session, a book sale and signing will be held.
